You are required to carry vehicle insurance in Mexico for liability. It is a good idea to also get a legal representation policy. The legal representation covers you if you do have an accident some one will come to the scene and represent you. Collision insurance is not required but you may want to have it. Check with your home insurer because they may cover you for collision in Mexico as long as you have a liability policy. I know that Miller Insurance Agency Inc, 1 800 622 6347 and AON Insurance 1 800 521 2942 has done this. There may be other companies so it is a good idea to ask your own company.  .

Always question!  I found out that the policy I have been buying actually insures our drivers licenses, not the vehicle. This means we can drive any vehicle in Mexico as long as it is not registered in Mexico. It is not specific to the vehicles we drive.

In British Columbia ICBC will refund your insurance for the time you are in Mexico. Save your toll receipts, RV park receipts and import/export papers. (you may have to get copies before you turn them in at the border. ICBC is like Mexico. Every year they want more documentation to prove you were in Mexico with you vehicle.

If you damage your vehicle in Mexico some insurers require you get your vehicle repaired in Mexico. Other companies require you to deliver the vehicle to the border. Make sure you ask the questions and get the answers clear and in writing. Some policies include a towing package that even covers breakdowns. Some toll roads provide free towing. this is included in the price of your toll. Body work in most cases is a bargain in Mexico and you can get good quality work.

It is a good idea to carry roadside assistance insurance like CAA or AAA.  If you have an RV and carry CAA at least one family member should have RV Plus.  This covers larger, heavier vehicles for towing.  In Mexico you will have to pay the towing charges. Get a receipt and you should be re-imbursed. There are many other companies out there. Some of the RV service clubs offer towing packages with their memberships or as an add on.

Many people buy "out of country medical insurance".  In Mexico the cost of medical care is much less than in the United States. Some insurance companies do not charge as much for the time you are in Mexico. We deal with a company called Travellers Insurance Coordinators (T.I.C.) Telephone 604 986 4292.  They seem to have a cheaper rate for Mexico and allow you 5 days in the U.S. each way. BCAA and CAA offer good insurance packages, too. I believe this is for Canadian out of country insurance only. I do not know how "out of country" works in the United States. Check with your health care provider.
